Balboa High School Honors Program

Balboa offers challenging honors courses for students who have been enrolled in honors programs in middle school, as well as for students who feel ready to accept the demands of harder work and higher standards. Ninth graders take honors English, Integrated Math 1-2 and 3-4, Marine Biology, and Strategies for Success/ Strategies for Health Success (this is a two-part, full year course; both parts are graduation requirements for all SFUSD students.) Electives include Spanish, French, or Mandarin; art, music, and a choice of either PE or JROTC. Students in honors are expected to be able to absorb large amounts of information quickly; to work independently or in small groups on projects; to demonstrate responsibility by turning in all assignments on time; to participate in classroom discussions; and to attend all classes and behave in a respectful manner to all members of the Balboa community. Students should be prepared to spend about 2 hours per night on homework, with more time necessary for special projects or studying for exams.

The Integrated Math program covers algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Honors students will complete the first two years of the program (1-2 and 3-4) in their freshman year. Because this course covers a lot of material and moves quickly, teachers are available to offer additional tutoring if necessary. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own achievement and to attend tutoring sessions whenever they need extra help. Tenth grade students complete IM5-6; juniors and seniors choose between pre-calculus, AP calculus, and AP statistics.

For the current 2007-08 school year, Balboa offers a full honors program in all grades, with Advanced Placement (AP) courses available for 11th and 12th graders.

Advanced Placement classes available in 2007-2008 include:

  • AP English
  • AP Spanish
  • AP Mandarin
  • AP Calculus
  • AP Computer Science
  • AP Statistics
  • AP Physics
  • AP Biology
  • AP World History
  • AP Art History (through the De Young Museum)
