Principal Thomas H. Graven's Introduction |
|
Hoover Middle school's motto in Latin is Semper Excelsior or 'Ever Higher.' We are proud to have maintained a
distinguished record of academic and extracurricular achievement as one of the premier middle schools of the SFUSD.
We are now building on that record to address equity and social justice in our school and address achievement gaps that exist in our classrooms.
Our dedicated faculty and staff are working together to build our community one relationship at a time, and to analyze and improve
teaching practices so that every one of our students will succeed in school. We are proud to offer one of the most
varied elective and art programs in our district in addition to high quality, GATE, SPED and Language Immersion programs |

Hoover
Middle School provides an articulated program of general education and
social preparation for early adolescents in grades 6 through 8.
Students have an opportunity to perfect basic skills and to participate
in both exploratory study and many enrichment activities. Our students
are strongly encouraged to participate in every aspect of the school
community.
Our students
are recognized for their academic excellence, physical, social and
esthetic accomplishments. They are expected to uphold the ideals of
citizenship, scholarship, sportsmanship, and school spirit.
Hoover
Middle School has a tradition of excellence in education. We stand by
our commitment that every student will be nurtured and supported as
they confront the developmental challenges awaiting them on their life
paths.

Hoover
Middle School has developed a comprehensive school safety plan covering
all aspects of planning for emergency response, staff training, support
and student safety. Regular drills and practices are held; students and
parents are informed as to what should be done in the event of natural
or man-made emergencies.
Staff,
community agencies and the SFFD/SFPD work with us on safety and support
issues. Our staff has also had training on various life saving
techniques, first aid and crisis responses. Students receive
instruction on acceptance of diversity in cultures, accepting personal
responsibility, and developing an understanding of the laws, rules and
regulations of our society and School District.
We
maintain a school hotline for students, parents and the community at
large to report unsafe activities to the school. There is ZERO
tolerance policy at the school for fighting, assault, battery,
hatred-inspired violence and bullying. In a recent study, parents with
children in the SFUSD have commented that in their opinions, Hoover
Middle School is a very safe and secure campus.

The
mission at Hoover reflects the diverse needs of a comprehensive city
middle school as well as the expectations placed upon the schools by
society and the governing bodies. First and foremost, Hoover's academic
goals ensure that each youngster learns not just the basic skills and
fundamental processes of education, but that each youngster develop the
ability to think rationally, problem solve and evaluate knowledge which
will enable him to make judgments and decisions as a student and
citizen. In our complex, interdependent world we must help youngsters
to understand, appreciate and value persons belonging to social,
cultural and ethnic groups different from their own. We must convey to
the youngsters a knowledge of the basic workings of government and to
develop a commitment to society by exhibiting kindness, compassion and
a willingness to share with others less fortunate. |
